MISO PsyOps poster

We don’t often run such items but the info graphic below nicely summarizes the art and history of psychological operations, though it doesn’t touch on the newer aspects of the art — social media and data mining. (After all knowing details of your target audience — age, sex, location, etc. — and influencing its actions are key to all this.)

It’s a fine reminder of some of the less often-covered aspects of the military art that can heavily influence the outcome of both wars and and battles. As the conflicts in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq morph, you can bet the battle for hearts and minds will intensify, even if it’s not directly in support of US troops fighting an enemy on the battlefield.

To get a better look at the current context of interagency and military PsyOps operations, you might want to read the latest Joint doctrine publication on Military Information Support Operations. Check out page II-9 for an elucidation of the various roles undertaken by the military, State Department and intelligence agencies.

“Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.”

Reminds me of a scifi novel, one of the Stainless Steel Rat series by Harry Harrison.
      .
Basically, interplanetary war doesn’t really exist because the logistics of supporting a war on another planet (even in the same solar system) was too difficult to overcome, yet someone managed it, twice. The Stainless Steel Rat (former criminal turned secret agent) was sent to investigate how it was managed. It turned out that one planet generated unrest and rebellion on the target planet. It then sent troops just before the rebellion breaks out. It would then appear that the planet was defeated externally when it actually lost internally.

It’s like what Lenin said… you look for the person who will benefit, and, uh, uh…

I like what Stalin said, the worst case against Democracy is talking to the common voter! Something to that effect.

        • Eric Palmer

What Lenin said was better. Just google “I like what Stalin said”

Don I’m going off subject here. Got a cuz who was in the 2nd Armored after Vietnam I think. He was around helicopters. He said they told him and the pilots that a blade come off a helicopter it would still fly enough it could get down, he said this even went for a 2 bladed Huey. I told him that would throw it off balance and there aint no way. A 5 or 6 blade rotor may possibly but I would still think that off balance would be too much to get out of alive too? He saw a guy die burning up from a helicopter crawling away from it. He said the guy had landed it at the base and an officer wanted him to move it to a tighter location and it crash doing that. That was like the Mash copters with the bubble canopy I think.

The F-35 will never fly, its just going to collapse. The spiral is coming, its knocking on the door *knock* *knock*. If one is quiet one can even hear the death spiral walking up the stairs.

    • Bud Boomer

or down the stairs for certain class of individuals

    • SS BdM Fuhress ‘Savannah

I don’t imagine the ‘knocks’ will be heard over the ‘Hey I got Green for your district Congressman and if we meet at lunch a nice envelope to slip you under the table and don’t worry about the tab for lunch, taken care of. Hey can you get a World War going be profitable for both of us”?

      • General Eric Palmer

But despite that the Knocks and the footsteps can still be heard. You just need to get your ears examined.

        • snafu

I agree with the General, this is getting too much. The Death spiral will be coming very soon. As early as next week. I have read on some twitter account. Why is the program keeping it under the raps I do not know, but it is coming. Watch out. The Farnborough show will be a pipe dream. The program is going to be cancelled by the death spiral before that. The planners of the show better have backups available because the inevitable death spiral is coming, In fact it is going to be coming next tuesday.

That takes seeing a doc, that’s stuff too expensive for me! My ears do get clogged up, think one that way now. I was running a carpet cleaning machine at work when I worked long long ago, pump and wet vac you know and I bent over for something and my ear opened up and it scared me thinking I had destroyed the new machine, then I realized my ear had been closed all that time. Plus had a Q-tip end get in one and 200 smackers to get that out. May have that now?

A rapid deployment force of French existential nihilists recruited from cafe’s throughout Paris parachuting in to Taliban strongholds to demoralize and destroy any sense of purpose and meaning they have should be tried. Armed with cigarettes and poetry. That’s all they need.

    • SS BdM Fuhress ‘Savannah

And after dealing with the bad guys will they search for some Amore behind the blinds on the faces? The French so romantic. Now somebody told me they went to France and said it was dirty as hell, as garbage around on the streets and the people looking dirty. The small college basketball team went there. Reinhardt Heydrich in WW2 was heading there, supposedly the reason he was assassinated.

Since the US doesn’t win wars anymore, the battle over the hearts and minds has been lost.

If you want to change hearts and minds, I suggest going back to wars that we actually won. Please remind me how we won against Germany and Japan? How did we change their hearts and minds?

    • SS BdM Fuhress ‘Savannah

Your not going to win a war without a hell of a lot of carpet bombing! Pinpricking hits here and there to cut that head off the snake that grows them back daily is nice in the media but won’t win a war!

  • Mike

PsyOps works if you can offer an oppressed people a better life….. We lost our way by supporting right wing dictators at the behest of the CIA and their “Domino Theory”…. ETO worked because no one wanted to be a pat of the “Nazi Club”….. One of the huge fears that the Russians had was that if they had come through the Fulda Gap, there were many Special Forces teams prepared to drop behind the Russians to supply, train and lead thousands of Eastern Europeans who hated the Russian Oppression and were prepared to give their lives to cut off fuel, food and ammunition to the Russians for a better life for their children….. The Ukraine is a good example of the same set to current affairs…. Afghanistan could work if the average Afgan is willing to take up arms against the Taliban for a better life for their children also…..

  • SS BdM Fuhress ‘Savannah

They forgot to add you are eligible to be ‘Cannon Fodder’!

    • Mike

As is any Soldier, Seaman, Airman or Marine…… Thank God we have enough willing to step up and do the “Heavy Lifting” so that the rest of us can enjoy the best life anywhere on this planet called earth….

      • SS BdM Fuhress ‘Savannah

I don’t mind doing my lifting to build a better world but if you want to send me out to pick up a dead body or grab a flag I’ll tell you when we kill all those firing first! I cannot see a soldier even expecting that out of his comrades, Hell I’m dead, you come out here and get killed that makes two dead, keep it up we are all dead and what was the soldiering about when we lose the war. Same for flags.

        • Mike

We don’t leave our dead and wounded on the field of battle. I you ever served you should remember that…..

          • SS BdM Fuhress ‘Savannah

I didn’t say nothing about the wounded. I would never serve to pick up the dead or an emblem that represents something until I had killed the enemy.
