Responsibilities

  • The six-member Personnel Subcommittee has oversight of all matters relating to active and reserve military personnel, including health care and education benefits, welfare and recreation services, and military nominations.

  • Ranking member of the Subcommittee on Intellectual Property.
  • Ranking member of the Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Protection, among others.
  • Member of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
  • Recently re-introduced the Toxic Exposure in the American Military (TEAM) Act, aimed at expanding the Department of Veterans Affairs’ health care benefits for veterans exposed to toxic substances. Calls the open air, burn pits once used to dispose of waste during the Persian Gulf War “this generation’s Agent Orange.”

  • Served in the North Carolina House of Representatives (District 98), from 2007 to 2015 Speaker of the House (2011 to 2015).

Education

  • University of Maryland University College – B.S. in technology management (1997).

Personal

  • Thomas Roland Tillis (Thom), was born on Aug. 30, 1960, in Jacksonville, FL, into what he calls “a working class family.” The oldest of six children. His father, Thomas Tillis, was a boat draftsman whose work required frequent moves. The family settled in Antioch, TN, where his dad worked as a home repairman. The senator credits his work ethic to him.
  • Married to Susan Tillis. They have two children. He enjoys mountain biking, among other sports.
