The compromise version of the fiscal 2025 National Defense Authorization Act, released on Saturday, includes several provisions aimed at improving the US military’s response to potential drone threats to its installations, including the creation of a counter-drone strategy.
As a new administration is set to take the reins of the Pentagon, the counter-drone strategy revealed today is meant to “lay a foundation for the Department to be able to get after this threat in a way that will be successful and get ahead of the evolution that we're seeing,” a DoD official said.
The Swedish firm says the system can be used for offense or defense in exercises.
Officials and experts have held up AI as a potential key aid in defeating drone swarms, though ethical concerns linger.
“One of the key things about Falcon Peak is it offers not just the opportunity to look at the technology that's being tested, but also at our processes," a senior DoD official told reporters.
“So, we need to stay in the race and find an answer to these threats, and use the lessons learned in the Red and Black seas,” General Thierry Carlier said during Euronaval.
“By all indications, sUAS will present a safety and security risk to military installations and other critical infrastructure for the foreseeable future,” said NORTHCOM chief Gen. Gregory Guillot.
"The pace and level of partnerships between EDGE and European original equipment manufacturers have significantly accelerated during the past four years," analyst Leonardo Jacopo Maria Mazzucco told Breaking Defense.
