Senator Tommy Tuberville, R-Alabama

 

Responsibilities

  • SASC’s Subcommittee on Personnel oversees both military and DoD civilian personnel policies. It sets the total number of military personnel allowed within any given branch of the US Armed Forces each year, and is responsible for military health care and related benefits, compensation and allowances for personnel. 
  • In 2023, Tuberville called into play a legislative blockade that delayed the promotions of more than 400 confirmed military nominations. At issue was the Pentagon’s abortion policy. The hold, which lasted for months, included the stalling of high-level promotions.

Military Career

A Logistics Officer in the US Marine Corps Reserve. Received his training at Marine Corps Base Quantico. Awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal for his military service.

 

Professional Career

Before arriving to the capitol in 2021, Tuberville, then a sports analyst for ESPN, had been named one of the top 50 most winning football coaches of all time. His career included:

  • University of Cincinnati (2013 – 2016). 
  • Texas Tech University  (2010 – 2012).
  • Auburn University  (1999 – 2008).
  • University of Mississippi (1995 – 1998).

 

Education

  • Graduated from Southern State College (now Southern Arkansas University), in Magnolia, AK, in 1976 with a B.S. in Physical Education. Later inducted into the University’s Sports Hall of Fame and the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame.

 

Personal 

  • Thomas Hawley Tuberville was born on Sept. 18, 1954, to Olive and Charles Tuberville Jr. He grew up in Camden, AK, graduating from Harmony Grove High School in Camden in 1972. 
  • Married Suzanne Fette in 1991. Together, they have two sons, Troy Allen and Tucker. Beyond his obvious interest in football, Tuberville says his interests range from NASCAR to military history.
