A Nov. 11 report by the Congressional Budget Office on the Navy’s goal to build its amphibious fleet up to 33 ships, beginning in fiscal year 2010. The service wants to buy 20 amphibious ships and retire 22 ships over the next 30 years, ending in 2041. Under that plan, the Navy will hit its 33-ship goal in 2017 under that plan and maintain it through 2031. After that, the amphibious fleet will fall below that number through 2014, according to the report.
