On Tuesday, the Air Force unexpectedly cancelled its $355 million contract to buy the Embraer Super Tucano. While service chief Gen. Norton Schwartz yesterday implied the program will be run back through a rigorous re-competition process, the Air Force’s formal filings leave some wiggle room: The service is only “setting aside” the contract award to Sierra Nevada Corporation and “reinstating” rival contractor Hawker Beechcraft “to the competitive range” while “reserving the right to conduct a whole new competition” — but not promising one outright.
