  • The House Subcommittee on Military Personnel has jurisdiction over DoD policy and programs related to military health care and benefits, education, POW/MIA issues, military justice and morale, welfare and recreation, commissaries, and retirement issues.

  • Elected to the House in 2013 (District-14), which covers parts of San Francisco and
    San Mateo County.
  • Represented California’s 12th Congressional District (2008-2013).
  • Served in the California State Senate (1998-2006).
  • Served in the California State Assembly (1986-1998).
  • San Mateo County supervisor (1980-1986).
  • From 1973-1978, Speier worked as legislative aide to Rep. Leo Ryan (D-Ca), who
    died in the 1978 Jonestown Massacre in Guyana. Speier, who accompanied him,
    was shot five times, but survived.
  • Introduced the ME TOO Act of 2018, which forms part of the revised1995 Congressional Accountability Act, which rules harassment claims in Congress.
  • Term ends in 2023.

  • Karen Lorraine Jacqueline Speier was born May 14, 1950, in San Francisco, CA, the
    daughter of Nancy (née Kanchelian) and Manfred “Fred” Speier.
  • Married to Barry Dennis, an investment consultant. Two children.
  • Author of three non-fiction books.
