The service said that requirements to keep 400 nuclear missiles on alert will not be impacted by the shuttering of a silo located at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming.
“We're still hopeful of having first flight this year,” Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said. “If I were to say it will, I would be making a very specific prediction, and I never do that about an acquisition program for something that hasn't happened yet.”
The scale of the silo conversion effort is something the Air Force nuclear complex hasn't seen in "over 50 or 60 years," Lt. Gen. James Dawkins, deputy chief of staff for strategic deterrence and nuclear integration, said today.
The B-21 program will not undertake traditional "block upgrades" to beef up future performance, says Air Force Global Strike Command head Gen. Timothy Ray. Instead, it will incrementally add new capabilities as they become available.
The benefit of diverse and effective long-range precision fires was reinforced by then-U.S. Pacific Command Commander Navy Adm. Harry Harris, who challenged the Army to develop more lethal, long-range precision fires that could not only engage adversary land targets, but also sink ships at sea.
As the services rush to field hypersonics, OSD’s top expert warns, they must not repeat sloppy mistakes that have marred past tests – and hypersonic cruise missiles may have more tactical value than easier-to-build boost-glide weapons.
"Certainly, we're in the in the conversation for the HACM as that gets developed," Global Strike Command head Gen. Timothy Ray said.
“It’s really important that we don’t let these issues get swept up in … political transitions between administrations,” warned the head of Air Force Global Strike Command.
"How are we going to employ hypersonic weapons, what do they bring to the battlefield?," asks Maj. Gen. Mark Weatherington, commander of the 8th Air Force and the Joint-Global Strike Operations Center.
JADC2 is foundational to future hypersonic weapons, says Gen. Ray: "If you don't have that, you just miss fast."
No political message was intended by the launch. Testing "is not used as a 'signaling mechanism' politically," Col. Omar Colbert, Air Force Global Strike Command's 576th Flight Test Squadron commander, stressed on Monday.
This is only the second time reporters from non-local media have been allowed to tour an ICBM test launch site and get briefed. Theresa and a small group of reporters will be allowed to watch tomorrow night's launch.
