NGI kicked off in 2019 after the cancellation of an earlier $5.8 billion plan to replace the existing Exo-Atmospheric Kill Vehicle, which defends the US mainland against long-range ballistic missile attacks.
“The real differentiator here is the acquisition strategy, with a lot of competition -- a lot of ‘fly before you buy’ -- built in,” CSIS' Tom Karako says. “The relatively longer NGI development timeline for homeland ballistic missile defense can be mitigated by near-term improvements” in ground missile defense.
Beijing represents “a threat to regional peace and stability, and to the rules based international order on which our security and prosperity, and those of our allies, depend,” Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks said
An official with knowledge of the program said there have been “no decisions” made on the Next Generation Interceptor program, which is awaiting the approval and award of two development contracts.

"I'm optimistic, based on my discussions with [MDA director] Jon Hill, that we'll potentially see the Next-Generation Interceptor move further left," Lt. Gen. Glen VanHerck told the Senate.
After a failed attempt to replace the current missile killers, the Pentagon wants to hurry and get the new technology online.
"If they tried that, I'd expect to see a bipartisan display of pitchforks on Capitol Hill, and the likeness of certain DoD officials burned in effigy," said one expert of any move to disband MDA.
"I like Dr. Griffin, but he should have come back to us and talked to us before he made that decision," complained Rep. Mike Rogers about funds for space-base sensors shifting to SDA.
