While US spending on national security space continues to dwarf that of the rest of world, non-US military space spending has jumped a whopping 76.5 percent over the last five years.
A memo from Space Force Staff Director Maj. Gen. Stephen Whitney, obtained by Breaking Defense, says Space Symposium is vital for "driving extensive collaboration" among officials from the United States and other countries across the spectrum of space activities.

"The majority (80%) of defense spending comes from the United States, but other nations, including Japan and Poland, increased space defense spending sharply last year," the Space Foundation assessment of the 2023 global space economy finds.
The Space Report 2023 Q2 study estimates that US Defense Department classified and unclassified spending in 2022 hit almost $43 billion.
"We're looking internally to my headquarters, as well as here at Peterson, to bring some of our great allies and partners into our staff and into our operations and processes here at the Combatant Command level as well," said SPACECOM head Gen. James Dickinson.
The Space Foundation's analysis shows a whopping 73 percent increase in the global space economy between 2009 and 2019: from 245.06 billion to 423.8 billion.

Given "aggressive and warlike actions, threatening actions, by space competitors, it's important for us to have an entity that is focused entirely on space defense, and space capability," said Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett of the new Space Force.
"The economic impact of this (COVID_19) situation may be most acutely felt by the smaller businesses in the booming space startup sector," says Megan Crawford, managing partner of Space Fund.
"It's mostly a bunch of backward-looking colonels at DoD" causing the problems, said one industry source, "not the IC."
