FROM THE EDITOR — Hello everyone! It’s your friendly neighborhood editor here, chiming in to wish our readers a very happy Thanksgiving.

It’s been another busy year here at Breaking Defense, with lots of things to be thankful for. In February, we added Michael Marrow as our Air Force reporter. In May, we brought Agnes Helou on full time as our first-ever Middle Eastern Bureau Chief. Weeks later, we bolstered our Israeli coverage by adding Seth Frantzman as our Israeli correspondent. And in September, we added Alyssa Miguel as assistant editor, to provide some much needed editorial bandwidth given the increased staff size of the last two years.

One of the things I’ve been personally thankful for this year is that both Agnes and Seth have stayed safe throughout the horrendous situation that has unfolded in Israel over the last six weeks. We thank them both for their ongoing work and encourage you to read their stories about the conflict from the ground.

It used to be that Thanksgiving marked the beginning of the end of the year for the defense community, with things winding down as we entered into the holiday season. Not so much this year, with a some key events still to come we’ll be covering for our readers:

  • Nov. 27-30 is the I/ITSEC simulation and training conference in Orlando
  • Dec. 2 is the Reagan National Defense Forum out in Simi Valley, Calif.
  • Dec. 11 is the Association of Old Crows International Symposium, outside of Washington
  • Dec. 12-14 is the DODIIS conference out in Portland, Oregon
  • Shortly after, we’ll kick off our 2023 Year in Review/2024 Year Preview project
  • We’ll also be putting out an eBook collections of some of our most notable op-eds from throughout the year

And of course, we’ll continue to have our regular coverage throughout.

I’ve said this to many folks individually since I took this job in July 2021, but I am always astounded at the level of knowledge and expertise our readers bring to the topics we cover. It’s really a pleasure to interact with the Breaking Defense community, and I’m very honored to be a part of it. You are all on my list of things I’m thankful for this year.

As for the team, we’ll be taking a two-day break here to spend time with family and friends. If the global situation has taught us anything over the last few years, it’s that such time is precious, and we should take advantage of it whenever possible.

We wish all of you a wonderful, if very full, Thanksgiving, and we’ll see you back here on Monday. And remember: Cranberry sauce from a can is better than any homemade cranberry sauce. It’s all about the ridges.
