“Additional measures” announced by Madrid in response to the Gaza conflict include a ban on any aircraft transiting Spanish airspace to transport defense equipment to Israel.
"As part of the project, IAF helicopters will be equipped with innovative technologies designed to ensure maximum protection in complex combat scenarios, including systems for identifying, disrupting, and neutralizing threats and systems for deflecting guided missiles," the Israeli Ministry of Defense noted.
The Feb. 5 trials took place in southern Israel’s Negev desert, where there is ample space for downing drones without any civilians around.
Under the new plan, the service could potentially begin fielding a mix of self-propelled howitzers in 2030, according to Maj. Gen. Glenn Dean.
The procurement of the new systems for the F-16s is part of a much larger process the Ministry of Defense has embarked upon since the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by Hamas.
“Both agreements will ensure sovereign capability in producing bombs and munitions of all types. We initiated this historic move before the war but accelerated it during it,” Israel Ministry of Defense’s Director General Eyal Zamir said.
“We were able to find some efficiencies [in the supplemental] that allowed us to buy small quantities of Iron Fist,” Maj. Gen. Glenn Dean, the service’s Program Executive Officer for Ground Combat Systems told Breaking Defense.
The upgrades are focused not on the tank's physical structure, but on incorporating the latest tech and systems.
The $60 million deal with Israel's Elbit Systems comes months after the US reportedly pulled 155mm shells from pre-positioned stocks in Israel.
The tests are a step toward “what could potentially be achieved on the battlefield with crewless vehicles in the next 10, 20 or 30 years,” said Lt. Col. James de St John-Pryce, commanding officer of the British Army's Armoured Trials and Development Unit.
Recently, Breaking Defense visited Squadron 161 at Palmachim Air Base in central Israel, the first time a media outlet was given access to the unit.
